SEVENTH ANNUAL SELENE RENDEZVOUS
|
|
The weather smiled on the Selene
fleet as it arrived at historic Roche Harbor for the seventh
annual Selene Rendezvous. The thirty-seven boats ranged from
40-62 feet and from 1998 vintage to just off the ship.

|
The Thursday
“bonus day” event was the Woman’s Boat Handling
Class, sponsored by Power Cruising Magazine.
Captains Patty and Carol of Florida’s Sea Sense
took sixteen brave women to sea in two Selenes.
The boats used were Selene 53, Duese, and Selene
48 Furthur. Duese was generously donated for
the day by Dave and Karen Pabst. The class
covered operations, engine room tour, and hands
on boat handling. The ladies who attended all
come back with an exhilarated enthusiasm for
boating.
Friday brought
classroom events, again taught by Captains Patty
and Carol of Sea Sense, covering Rules of the
Road, navigation and a segment of hands on chart
plotting. Mark Tilden gave a talk about the new
features of the Selene owner’s website.
The partying
started Friday night at the annual Docktail
Party, sponsored by SeaCoast Marine Finance.
This year we added a charity auction benefiting
SoundWatch, an island based whale protection
organization. The bidding was fast and fierce
for the three highly prized items; a full set of
Southeast Alaska charts donated by Bellingham
Chart Printers, a custom mattress donated by
Canvas Supply and the highly coveted John Deeere
bicycle donated by Cascade/John Deere. We
raised $2500 and had a great time.
Saturday classes
started out with a presentation by Sound Watch
explaining the dos and don’ts of whale
watching. With new government regulations this
knowledge is very important. We left the whales
and headed north to Alaska with an extraordinary
presentation by Linda Lewis on cruising
Southeast Alaska. Her combination of detailed
cruising information with exquisite photos and
humorous stories made her presentation one you
didn’t want to miss.
Throughout the
event the exhibitor’s tent was packed with our
supporting sponsors showing off their wares.
From inflatable’s to custom Selene jewelry the
tent held something for everyone.
The Selene
Rendezvous Annual Awards Dinner brought over one
hundred and eighty Seleners to eat, drink, and
celebrate the awards. This year our sponsors
provided very valuable prizes such as three free
haul outs by Lake Union Yacht Center, labor
certificates by Townsend Bay Marine, custom
bedding by Canvas Supply, and a new web tracking
devise by Selene Yacht Service. Fun was had by
all as some coveted and some not so coveted
awards were given out.
The Selene fleet
sailed Sunday mourning with the added benefit of
the “Blessing of the Fleet” given by the San
Juan Island Yacht Club Chaplain, Marilyn Nasman.
We wish the Seleners happy boating one and all.

Power Cruising
Magazine Sea Trials Selene 59 |
|
Power Cruising
Magazine Reviews the Selene 59 in it's Jan-Feb 2008
issue. "...The 59 is not simply a stretched
version of Selene 57 (reviewed in Power Cruising,
July/August 2005, page 74). Rather, it’s a new design
with a more rounded underbody, a slightly longer
waterline and a wider beam. Both boats weigh in around
50 tons loaded, but the 59 has a lower prismatic
coefficient (.67 instead of .73), which indicates a
greater concentration of immersed volume amidships and a
hull optimized for lower speed-to-length ratios.
One worthwhile
benefit of this redistribution of volume is a
full-headroom engine room — an area where the Selene 57
came up a bit short. And as long as the Selene 59 is
cruising at an S/L below about 1.1 (equivalent to 8.9
knots), its available bulbous bow is effective at
suppressing wave-making — saving fuel while
simultaneously improving seakindliness through pitch
damping." more... |

The Selene 40- Quality, Capability
& Value find Harmony |
|
PassageMaker Yachts, a Story by Bill Parlatore. Every boat tour has
its story: interesting people, unusual surroundings, and
encounters that take me where I never imagined. In my
book, the tale behind my tour of the Selene 40 ranks up
there with the best of them, with twists and turns and
unexpected connections. The story began four years ago
when I visited Jet-Tern Marine with Ted Hood, Brian
Calvert, Alex Marcus, and John Clayman and we stepped
aboard the first hull of the just-launched Selene 36
trawler. The boat, while good looking and with a
traditional layout...
